“During my 43 years in medical practice, the hardest thing I’ve had to deal with is sitting at a patient’s bedside and seeing how their frailty has depleted them,” says Steven C. Fox, D.O., the medical director of Wellspring Personal Care. As a licensed physician and surgeon whose practice has been devoted to the care of the elderly and disabled, Dr. Fox felt moved to help as many people as possible change their lifestyles—even slightly—to give them a better healthy life expectancy.
That is why he launched a tool called Resilient 80s, a free online assessment that helps individuals aged 60-90 learn their “functional age.” Functional age is different from your chronological age. It reflects your:
- Equilibrium and balance
- Exercise tolerance and stamina
- Psychological age and morale
The Resilient 80s Functional Age® Test is done online in about 30 minutes. The test asks some basic questions about your current health and state of mind. You will also need to complete two simple physical tests: stand-to-sit and balancing on one leg. Resilient 80s then emails you the results in PDF format. Here’s what you will learn.
Yes, you can improve your functional age
If your test results show that your functional age is higher (older) than your chronological age, you have a starting point for making healthier lifestyle choices. “The good news is that with practice and something as simple as a walking program and exercise, most of us can improve and lower our functional age,” says Dr. Fox.
And increasing human lifespans provide great motivation to work at staying as healthy as possible for as long as possible. “People today are living longer than previous generations,” Dr. Fox says. “We all need to do something about staying healthy.”
The Resilient 80s website notes: “You really are as young as you feel.” Learn more, review a sample report, and take the test at www.Resilient80s.com.
